CURRICULUM
Learning at Avanti6 Bishop’s Stortford takes young people well beyond the bounds of examination specifications. This wider, super-curricular, learning is integral to the ethos of our Sixth Form and ensures that our students excel in examinations, stand out when applying for university places, apprenticeships and employment, and develop their leadership capacity as spiritually compassionate changemakers.
Independent super curricular learning
Each department recommends a range of resources and activities, from podcasts and documentaries to reading lists and recommended visits, to guide students to pursue their interests and to deepen their understanding of their chosen subjects and disciplines.
This independent wider reading and engagement is key to success in attaining the highest grades and access to the most competitive destinations.
Duke of Edinburgh
Students in Year 12 are encouraged to sign up to the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Avanti Grange received a gold award from Hertfordshire for the largest number of participants in the bronze award in 2025-26, and we look forward to building on that success.
The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award involves skills development, volunteering, physical skills development, a 5-day residential and a 4-day expedition.
Trips and visits
We offer a wide range of trips and visits linked to students’ courses of study, including fieldwork in Biology, Earth Sciences (Geology) and Geography, and both day and residential study visits for History, Art, Design and Technology, Chemistry and Physics.
In addition, there are a number of enrichment trips open to students at Avanti 6, with destinations including Iceland, Canada (senior ski trip) and South Africa (senior sports tour).
Avanti Inspires speaker programme
Our Avanti Inspires speaker programme offers talks by experts from a range of fields, from climate science to history.
Students play a role in leading this programme, inviting speakers on topics of interest.
Co-curricular electives
Wednesday afternoons are dedicated to our co-curricular electives, with a range of activities on offer including sports clubs, sports teams, yoga and meditation.
Avanti 6 students contribute to the wider co-curricular programme of the school through their leadership of co-curricular activities for Years 7-11, and their work with our primary schools, for example through the Sports Leaders programme.
Ethos electives
Students will choose from a programme of modules to put together a programme of PSHE, PRE and Careers learning to suit their needs.
Pathways
Our enrichment pathway complements students’ A-level courses with a range of additional courses at Level 3, including the EPQ, or the option of GCSE Spanish ab initio.
