Performing
You will perform as a soloist and/or ensemble musician, building technical and expressive skills.
Composing
You will compose original pieces, including one to a set brief and one free composition.
Appraising
In appraising, you will analyse set works and unfamiliar music using musical terminology.
Areas of study
Areas of study include the Western Classical Tradition (Haydn and Mendelssohn), Jazz (studied by all students) and music from the twentieth or twenty-first century.
You will explore harmony, melody, rhythm, structure and texture, and learn how music reflects its cultural and historical context.
The course develops listening skills, creativity and confidence.

Ms Prebble , Subject Lead
Ms Prebble brings a passion for performance and composition to the classroom, holding a Bachelor of Musical Arts (Honours) from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, specialising in jazz piano.
With extensive gigging and live performance experience, alongside Grade 8 ABRSM Classical Piano, she supports students in developing both technical skill and musical expression across a range of styles.
Mr Day specialises in guitar and brings a wealth of teaching experience, supporting students of all abilities to develop confidence and refine their performance skills.
He has a strong practical background in a range of musical styles and is dedicated to helping students grow as independent and creative musicians through supportive, engaging lessons.
Students also benefit from a wide range of peripatetic instrumental and vocal lessons provided by Hertfordshire Music Service, offering expert tuition across many instruments to further support progress, performance and preparation for assessment.
